Rumors have been swirling regarding Nintendo’s next home console for many months now, but this latest one is certain to grab lots of people’s attention. The rumor says that a Super Smash Bros. game is currently in-development for the NX by Bandai Namco, with the game apparently aiming to be a launch title for the console. The rumor was started by Twitter user @serkantoto, who has revealed information in the past that has ended up being true before. While the news of a Super Smash Bros. game coming to a Nintendo console might not be the biggest news, considering it could be coming so soon after the launch of the previous games is very interesting.
As for the specific tweets that @serkantoto posted, he said that, “Bandai Namco is currently developing several NX titles. Smash Bros is planned to be a launch title. I am not sure about the date – yet ;).” He goes on to say, “To follow up on my last tweet: I haven’t heard if it’s a completely new (numbered) Smash Bros or not. Otherwise, source situation is solid.” This suggests that the game could end up being a spin-off or re-release, which is possible considering how relatively new Super Smash Bros. for Wii U & 3DS are. Still, considering how poorly the Wii U has sold Nintendo could very well have decided to fast-track the development to boost sales for the NX.
These rumors also line up with previous reports that were suggesting that the series’ creator, Masahiro Sakurai, had already begun working on the next game in the series. While he noted that he had been hard at work on the DLC for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS that included the likes of characters like Cloud and Bayonetta, he also said that his next project had already been decided. Considering that Sakurai mostly only works on games in the Smash series barring a Kirby and Kid Icarus game, it is certainly possible that he could already be working on the next Super Smash Bros. game.
