He’s been a cosplayer, a surfer and a giant, real life balloon before, but soon Pikachu will be taking on a new challenge – solving crimes. Nintendo announced today that Great Detective Pikachu, which was originally unveiled back in October 2013, will be launching on February 3rd in the Japanese Nintendo eShop, and have released a very Sherlock-esque live action launch trailer to promote the title. If he plays a tiny violin in the full game I will lose my shit.
It’s not clear what genre the game will fit into, how it will play or even what it really looks like, but what is clear is that Pikachu has become a regular chatty Cathy, likely due to cracking cases being more difficult when you can only repeat your own name.
The title stars, naturally, Pikachu, complete with adorably tiny deerstalker, and a human companion named Watson Tim, who seems not to be a trainer in the regular sense, as they solve crimes and possibly even find love in what looks like real-life Tokyo. Great Detective Pikachu has not been given a Western release date – or even a Western trailer or website – so it’s not clear if it will make it out of Japan. Nevertheless, with 2016 being the 20th anniversary of the Pokemon franchise, Nintendo will be looking to capitalise on the brand and with no new mainline title in sight, it stands to reason that we might see a side-game like this localised.
More information can be found on the game’s Japanese website.
