Halloween came early in August of last year when the Early Access version of Layers of Fear graced Steam. Half a year later, the psychological horror will be released in full to Steam, PS4, and Xbox One on February 16th. It’s a great Valentines Day gift idea for you and your loved one who share a profound love of terrifying portraits and artists who have lost their mind.
Developed by the Bloober Team, Layers of Fear is centered around a painter whose life has hit absolute rock bottom, and then some. He struggles to push himself to create his ultimate Magnum Opus, a painting that will help him regain the recognition he was once surrounded with. The creation of this painting, however, is absolutely grisly when you begin to see just how desperate this artist is use techniques never used before (and for good reason). While the artist attempts to finish what he started, he wanders his home in a psychedelic state, where paintings are spontaneously combusting or melting to reveal disfigured faces, and a mysterious figure is following your every step, waiting for you to make the mistake of looking behind you. As you, the player, wander around the impossibly spaced home, you begin to learn more and more about the history of how this painter reached his breaking point.
The Early Access version of Layers of Fear, where it stops at a cliffhanger until the full game is released, is still available for purchase on Steam for $12.99.
