While everyone is waiting to see what 2018 will bring along in terms of flagship smartphones, new low- and mid-range smartphones are also in the works. Sony is preparing to launch no less than three new models. These will be the successors to the company’s Xperia XA1, XA1 Ultra, and L1 models. Unsurprisingly, the new models will have similar monikers, namely the Sony Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra, and L2. Rumors have surfaced a while back regarding these handsets and now it seems that the official renders have also come along, showing the handsets in all their glory.
In terms of design, not much changed. The new Sony Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra, and the L2 keep the same thick bezels we’ve previously seen in their predecessors. The Sony Xperia XA2 got a slightly larger and higher resolution display and a larger lens on the front, but the external changes seem to have stopped here. On the inside, however, the changes are more important. The Sony Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra and L2 all ditch the Mediatek chipsets their predecessors sported and come with new Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chipsets. Unfortunately for those who were hoping for larger amounts of memory and internal storage, nothing seems to have changed in this section. The new models will offer 3GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage and 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage respectively.
The Sony Xperia XA2 will have a new camera setup too. On the back, the handset features a 21MP lens while on the front it has a 7MP selfie snapper. This actually seems like a downgrade, at least on paper, as the XA1 sported a 23MP primary sensor and an 8MP secondary camera. As for the larger Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra, its cameras will also change a bit. On the back the status remains the same as it was in the case of its predecessor, however, on the front, it will now sport a 15MP dual camera setup for selfies.
Both the Sony Xperia XA2 and XA2 Ultra will reportedly come running Android Oreo out of the box. The lower-grade Xperia L2, on the other hand, will most likely ship with the older Android Nougat on board. Sony could launch the new models as soon as next week, at the CES 2018. It is also possible that the company will wait with the launch event until the MWC 2018 which will take place in February in Barcelona. Considering the fact that sometimes the date displayed in the renders is the launch date, the Mobile World Congress at the end of February seems to be the most likely bet.
