Smartphones have come a long way since they were first launched. Besides the obvious changes in design and the fact that they keep getting larger, they also have a lot more to offer than they predecessors. Handsets nowadays have faster and more powerful processors, higher amounts of memory and storage. A few years back, it was perfectly normal to have a smartphone that included 8GB of storage at best. Flagship handsets nowadays include 128GB or even 256GB of flash storage. As it seems, this still isn’t enough. Samsung just started mass-producing 512GB eUFS storage. This doubles the maximum amount of storage we’ve had before in a smartphone.
The majority of people really don’t need this much storage space on their smartphones. However, those who like to have all their favorite music and videos on their smartphone or love to capture memories by filming everything will definitely be delighted by the new storage Samsugn has developed for them. One of the best things about the 256GB Samsung storage is that it won’t make smartphones thicker. The size of the storage is exactly the same as the size of the 256GB one. Instead of the 256GB storage’s 48-layer chips, the new storage uses 64-layer 512-gigabit (Gb) V-NAND chips.
Thankfully, copying content with this storage will be quite fast. According to Samsung, it will only take 20 seconds to copy a 5GB file to this storage and only 6 seconds to copy the same file from this storage to another one. While the company will first use this storage as smartphones’ internal storage, Samsung will use the same technology to build SSDs and memory cards as well. Not everyone will get the new storage on their smartphone, naturally. Even so, the fact that this is now available will certainly affect mid-range handsets also, as they will probably get more storage too in the future. And this is good news for everyone. After all, we just can’t have enough storage on our gadgets, can we?
The next-generation Samsung flagships probably won’t get this much storage just yet. It is more probable that the 2019 models will come offer 512GB of internal storage.
