Andy Rubin’s company announced the Essential phone back in May and released it a lot later than expected. We all thought that the father of Android will offer timely software updates for its handset. Well, it seems that this was quite an optimistic expectation. The company recently announced on its Twitter page that the Android Oreo update will reach Essential Phone units “in the next couple months”. If we are to consider the fact that the smartphone should have hit the stores in 30 days and it actually arrived after a couple of months, this timeframe could also get a lot longer.
Other manufacturers take months too before rolling out the latest version of Google’s software. Even so, given the fact that the Essential Phone runs nearly stock Android, users were definitely expecting to get the update a lot sooner. The disappointment of some Essential Phone users is pretty obvious in the comments that followed the announcement. To be honest, the Essential PH- 1 is not a cheap smartphone so all those who invested in it naturally expected not only high-end specs but also timely updates and seriosity on behalf of the company. After all, what use is it in purchasing a great smartphone if it arrives months later than expected and then the software updates come late too?
Of course, there is a silver lining to the announcement too. In the image tweeted by the company users can finally have a better glimpse at the Essential Phone’s charging dock. We’ve seen images of the device earlier, however, they weren’t as clear as the most recent one. Unfortunately, this just might not be enough for the majority of users. They purchased the handset with nearly stock Android in mind and they expected the company to roll out software updates earlier than other manufacturers do. At this point, we have no evidence that this will be the case. Essential doesn’t really seem to be able to keep its promises. Hopefully, the delays in delivering the handset and the software update will be last ones to disappoint fans. The company is a promising one and it would be a shame to lose the great headstart they had with Andy Rubin in charge.
