We recently talked about how NVIDIA was prepping a new entry level graphics card to compete with AMD’s Radeon RX 550, which is reportedly going to be the GeForce GT 1030. We now have more proof that this is something that is coming soon, as that card’s Pascal based GP108 GPU has now been pictured. This will be powering NVIDIA’s upcoming graphics card, and you can see it at the top of this post.
For those who missed the last post, the GeForce GT 1030 is aiming to be the new king of the entry level graphics card market. The price tag is reportedly going to be under $100, with rumors suggesting it could be $59-$69. This would allow NVIDIA to gain ground on AMD, who recently released their own entry level graphics card with the $79 Radeon RX 550. It is expected that the GeForce GT 1030 will be revealed by NVIDIA soon, with an official launch happening next month.
As for the GP108 GPU pictured above, it is very small and comes in at around 100mm2. For a comparison, the GP107 measured in at 132mm2. It should also be mentioned that this smaller size also comes with lower power consumption, with a TDP of 30 instead of the previous 50. Due to the specs of the graphics card and the market that it’s being aimed at, this will be enough to get casual gamers by.
As reported previously, the GeForce GT 1030 will have 512 CUDA cores and a VRAM of 2/4 GB GDDR5, and will have a 64-bit memory bus with a 30w TDP. This makes it comparable to the Radeon RX 550, with both graphics cards containing 32 TMUs and 16 ROPs. The Radeon RX 550 utilizes 512 Steam Processors compared to GeForce GT 1030’s 512 CUDA cores, while also sporting a larger 128-bit memory bus. However, the real deciding factor of which will be better will come down to the price tag, and NVIDIA has a good shot at coming out on top here. The Radeon RX 550 is $79, so if NVIDIA can come in on the lower end of the previous $59-$69 rumors then they’ll be hard to beat in that space.
