Almost a year and 2 months ago Sony first announced the Xperia Touch at the 2016 MWC, saying that the device would be available in Spring 2017. What does this have to do with anything, you may ask? Sony tweeted today a picture of the Xperia Touch with an accompanying caption of “Turn a flat wall, table, or even your floor into an interactive screen.” Does this mean that the Xperia Touch is finally on its way to our homes (for those that can afford it, of course) or is it just a reminder from Sony telling us that this project is still alive?
The Xperia Touch is a 932g (69 x 134 x 143 mm) projector that may remind you of a large version of Apple TV. As any other projector, it projects your screen on any surface you want. But Sony decided to take it a few steps further. OK, maybe a lot more than just a few steps! This projector is just like any other smartphone, but 9 times heavier and without a screen. It beams a touchscreen-like interface for you to interact with. Yes, this means you can finally play, surf the internet, check your emails and everything else you would do with your smartphone on any surface you want.
With that being said, the Xperia Touch comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, it supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, type D HDMI and type C USB. The “screen” starts at 23 inches and can go up to 80 with 1366 x 768 resolution, 100 lumens brightness and 4000:1 contrast ratio. The touch control is using IR sensor with up to 10 fingers multi-touch. A really cool feature that comes with it is that the Xperia Touch can sense you coming. So, according to the settings you have chosen, it will work as a clock on the wall or as an information board letting you know everything need to know upon approaching it.
Although the price has not been revealed yet, some rumors say that it might cost 1499€. Of course, this means that many people will not even think of buying it. It is supposed to be released this Spring, but the exact date is still unknown. You can take a look at the device for yourself right here.
