Samsung and Apple are definitely the toughest players on the smartphone market right now. However, this doesn’t mean they are the only ones that should be considered when choosing a new smartphone. A lot of other companies started to deliver more than decent smartphones for lower prices than either of the tech giants. Huawei is one of them. The Chinese company may not be as popular as Apple or Samsung, but it really has a lot to offer. During the MWC 2017, Huawei launched its flagship devices, the P10, and the P10 Plus. Only a few weeks later, its most popular subsidiary, Honor, launched the Huawei Honor 8 Pro. As you probably guessed, this is an improved version of last year’s Honor 8. Improved in almost every single way.
Given that both, or to be more exact, all three of these gadgets is great, it’s hard to say which one of them is the company’s flagship device.
The Huawei Honor 8 Pro is the latest addition to the subsidiary’s lineup of smartphones. It is the successor of the Honor 8 that launched in 2016. Even though its name would suggest that it is only a minor improvement, not a totally new device, almost every feature was enhanced in this handset. Instead of the Honor 8’s 5.2-inch 1080p display, the Huawei honor 8 Pro sports a 5.7-inch 1440p display which is a lot more impressive. The overall design of the smartphone is better than its predecessor’s was.
The back cover of the Huawei Honor 8 Pro is made of aluminum instead of being covered in glass. This makes it feel more comfortable and naturally, it won’t become smudgy anytime soon either. The color options are also quite interesting, customers will be able to choose between a navy blue, a midnight black, and a platinum gold option. While all of these look insanely awesome, the navy blue seems to be the most interesting choice. Some would say that the Honor 8 Pro has an iPhone look to it. We must admit, this is true. But this is not necessarily a bad thing. After all, the majority of people like the iPhone look.
When it comes to power, the Huawei Honor 8 Pro really goes the extra mile. It has a Huawei Kirin 960 processor and it includes no less than 6GB of RAM. Apart from this, it also offers 64GB of internal storage. Those who need some extra storage can use the second SIM card slot for a microSD card. The handset supports up to 256GB external storage. This is most definitely more than enough for a regular smartphone user. In order to ensure the necessary power for this handset, Huawei added a 4,000mAh battery to the package. Speaking of the package, the Huawei Honor 8 Pro’s box can be turned into a Google Cardboard viewer for VR.
The one feature that didn’t change compared to the Honor 8 is the camera setup. The Huawei Honor 8 Pro has the same 12MP dual rear camera setup as the previous model. One of the sensors is a color one while the other is a monochrome sensor. These two come together in delivering a high- quality image that is clear and detailed. The dual rear camera is able to capture 2160p videos at 30 frames per second. The secondary camera of the smartphone has an 8MP sensor with f/ 2.0 aperture and it captures 1080p selfies.
Other features of this handset include a rear-mounted fingerprint- sensor, fast battery charging, a USB Type-C reversible connector and USB On-The- Go. It runs on Google’s latest version of the Android Nougat software, which makes it even more desirable. Surprisingly, the Huawei Honor 8 Pro is not obscenely expensive. It will become available starting April 20 for a starting price of only €549, or £474.99. One major downside to this handset is that it won’t be available, at least for now, in the US.
The Huawei P10 is the other Huawei flagship of this year. Firstly, it is smaller than the Honor 8 Pro. It only has a 5.1-inch display. For some people bigger is always better, other might consider this a plus for the P10. Not everyone wants to carry around a huge smartphone all the time. Unfortunately, the display of the P10 is only a 1080p one. This might be enough, but it isn’t nearly as impressive as the Quad HD display of the Honor 8 Pro. Of course, the images are still clear and sharp, but the display of the Honor device is just better.
The design of the P10 is somewhat similar to the one of the Huawei Honor 8 Pro. The main difference is that the corners of the P10 are not as rounded as the ones of the Honor 8 Pro. The P10 also has an additional physical button in the front. Somehow, the Honor 8 Pro seems to be more appealing. On the other hand, the P10 offers more color options, so this could be a plus in many people’s eyes.
The Huawei P10 has the same CPU and GPU as the Huawei Honor 8 Pro. This makes it equally powerful. However, it only includes 4GB of RAM, not 6GB, as the Honor 8 Pro does. I guess it’s quite clear which device is the winner in this section. The P10 is available with 32GB or 64GB of internal storage and it also offers users the possibility to further expand this by up to 256GB via its second SIM card slot which also works as a microSD card slot. Surprisingly, the battery of the P10 is smaller than the one of the Honor 8 Pro. The P10 only comes with a 3,200mAh battery. Even though this is indubitably smaller, it is enough to take a normal user through the day. Then again, in this case, bigger is better.
In the camera section, the P10 finally wins some ground. It sports a dual rear camera setup, just like the Honor 8 Pro, but in this case, we have a 20MP sensor and a 12MP one. The front facing camera is pretty much the same, with an 8MP sensor. Naturally, the P10 offers a number of other features too, including a Type-C reversible connector, a fingerprint sensor, NFC, a series of different sensors, and the Android nougat software.
Even though the majority of the Huawei Honor 8 Pro’s specs are better than the ones of the P10, the latter is more expensive. This is why customers will most likely opt for the Honor device instead of the P10. If you can have better specs and a nicer design for less money, why would you choose to pay the extra bucks?
In conclusion, the Huawei Honor 8 Pro just seems to be the better device in every way. it looks better, it is more powerful, and it comes with a cardboard VR viewer. On the other hand, the P10 will be available in the US too, so in the States, customers can only opt for this device.
