It has been a few years since the last version of the iMac released, with 2014’s release bringing “Retina 5K” display at a resolution of 5120 x 2880 pixels. The wait shouldn’t be much longer, however, as the company has revealed that they are currently working on iMacs that they plan to release later this year.
Apple’s software engineering chief Craig Federigh said “The original iMac, you never would’ve thought as remotely touching pro uses. And now you look at today’s 5K iMac, top configs, it’s incredibly powerful, and a huge fraction of what would’ve traditionally — whether it’s audio editing, video editing, graphics, arts and so forth — that would’ve previously absolutely required the Mac Pros of old, are being well-addressed by iMac. But there’s still even further we can take iMac as a high performance, pro system, and we think that form factor can address even more of the pro market.
The Future Looks Good For Mac
Apple also discussed many different aspects of the company and where things are heading in the future. Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller talked about how Mac has been growing faster than the PC industry, saying “Last year we had a little bit of a setback, and then this year, back to growth again — growing faster than the industry. It’s something we plan to keep on doing for a very long time.” Microsoft Windows has dominated the PC industry for a long time, but it seems that Apple is nevertheless gaining some ground.
Schiller then goes on to discuss the Mac user base, saying that they are nearing 100 million Mac users worldwide. It’s also getting close to being a Fortune 100 company, nearing a $25 billion run rate. As for the breakdown regarding the sales of their laptops and desktops, right now they are currently around 80% laptops and 20% desktops. The MacBook Pro has been a big success for them, with 20% growth in fiscal year Q1 year over year.
