The future of Apple’s MacBook Air series of laptops is one that many have mixed opinions on, as some think that an update for the laptop will be announced soon and others think the company is gearing up to discontinue it. The mixed response to the previous MacBook Air could end up causing Apple to go in a different direction for the next MacBook, but it may not be time to count another MacBook Air out just yet.
Many retailers have begun reducing the price of the current MacBook Air in their stores, which is usually done on the verge of the announcement of a new model. Best Buy is one of the retailers that have cut the price of the device, with the company reducing the price last month. This would suggest that the announcement of a new model would be coming relatively soon, with speculation suggesting that it would be either April or May if the company is to keep with the release window of their last MacBook. Intel’s Kaby Lake processor, a USB Type-C port, an Apple Pencil trackpad, Touch ID with Force Touch and a Retina Display are some of the rumored specs for the device.
However, this is assuming that a 2017 version of the MacBook Air launches at all, as there are plenty out there who feel there’s a good chance of it being discontinued. The MacBook Air drew heavy criticism last year when it only included 8GB of RAM for its 13″ model, with the company ceasing production of the 11″ model entirely. Seeing as the MacBook Pro offers very similar features compared to the MacBook Air, some are speculating that the MacBook Pro series could end up replacing the Air series entirely. The original MacBook Air was announced in 2008, so the company could be coming to the conclusion that it’s time put the Air series to rest.
Whatever ends up being the case, it shouldn’t be much longer until we get the official announcement from Apple. It’s this time of year when we get news regarding the MacBooks, as it was April of last year when we received the latest variant.
