Samsung recently revealed their latest high-end smartphones with the announcement of the Galaxy S8 and S8+, putting them first on the map for the must-have smartphone of 2017. However, big things are expected from their main competitor Apple this year, as it marks the 10th anniversary of their groundbreaking iPhone. Rumors have been swirling for a while now suggesting what the iPhone 8 from Apple may or may not have, and now we have some new ones to share.
Relocated Touch ID
The latest rumor suggests that the fingerprint sensor button may be located on the back of the iPhone 8, which would be a big change compared to the previous models that had it on the front of the phone at the bottom. It also contradicts what previous rumors have suggested, which claimed that they would be getting rid of the fingerprint sensor button entirely and instead go with an in-display fingerprint scanner. This scanner has been an important feature for iOS devices for a while now, as it allows users to unlock their phones with one touch.
If this is a move that turns out to be true, then it would definitely be taking a similar path that Samsung took with their Galaxy S8. It will be interesting to see where on the phone Apple decides to put the button if true, as some Samsung fans have noted concerns over the company’s decision to put the button right next to the camera. It has been suggested that Samsung was looking to utilize an in-screen scanner rather than having a button for it, but they simply ran out of time to implement it before launch.
Vertical Dual-Camera Setup
Along with the rumor of the relocated scanner button is a new dual-camera setup, with the cameras being stacked vertically on the back of the phone. This is a departure compared to how the company used a dual-camera setup in the past, with the iPhone 7 having a dual-camera setup that was horizontal. There are several things that this new setup could improve for users, but one could be increased depth when using the phone with AR or VR devices.
These of course need to all be taken with a big grain of salt, as there are plenty of rumors that bubble to the surface that end up being completely false. However, considering the mixed reception of last year’s iPhone 7 and the fact that the company is expected to do something big for the iPhone’s 10th anniversary, it stands to reason that we could end up seeing a bold new direction for the phone when it is finally revealed later this year.
