Google recently released the first developer preview for the next version of its mobile operating system called Android O, with developers being able to tinker around with a rough draft of the OS that will launch in full later this year. The company has previously said that the OS is still in the early days of development with more features coming, but now they have released a video explaining what’s in store.
The video is simply titled ‘What’s New In Android O For Developers,’ which goes over the main enhancements that the OS will be bringing over previous versions. These include things like improvements to performance, privacy, notifications, XML resources and more. One notable enhancement will be an improved battery life, which the company has achieved by being more strict with background play for apps. Android O makes it so that the background services of apps will only play for a limited time, and once that time is up the app will no longer be running in the background.
The new OS is also set to support Multi-Display, meaning that users will no longer have to mirror their Android screen to make it show up on the screen of another device. Android O has built-in support for secondary displays that even has separate display settings, giving you a little more control when viewing on external devices. You also have control over what displays on your phone and what you display on the secondary device, such as your phone displaying the notes of a presentation while the secondary display shows the visual presentation.
There’s a lot more in regards to what Android O will be bringing to the table, so be sure to check out the video at the bottom of this post. It remains to be seen when the company actually releases the final build for the new operating system, though it is expected to launch at some point this year. The final name for the OS is also up for debate, though many are suggesting that it will ultimately be named Android Oreo.
