March the 23rd, Apple made the Workflow app available to freely download from the App Store. If you’re a constant multi-tasker and you’re unaware of the existence of Workflow, then you’ve come to the right place.
Workflow is an automated program that connects actions through multiple apps to form one directive. Workflow’s Action Extension software recognizes the content of the apps you look at the most and creates a way for users to send information from one application to another with only one button to tap.
For example, let’s say you wanted to collect all of your receipts into one document and send them in an email to your accountant. With Workflow, you can build a program where, with only one click, you can relay information from your banking app to your word processor (which, in Mac’s case, is Pages) and instantly create a document that can then be sent automatically to your accountant.
Workflow can save the average iPhone user a lot of time. If you’re not an expert at linking apps together, there’s a gallery of other people’s workflows that you can download for free. If you’re not too technically savvy, this option can be the most useful part of the app.
Once you download a workflow, you can customize any aspect of it to fit what you want to do. For example, let’s say you wanted to take your photos and turn them into GIFS; however, you don’t want to do this to all of your photos. You can edit the Workflow program so that you can manually select each photo as well as adjust how much time the photo is shown in the resulting GIF videos.
You can use a workflow by accessing it from the share menu (usually found at the bottom left of an app) or through a widget in Notification Center. You can also have your workflows appear as app icons on your home screen. Workflows can be downloaded and used as-is, manually tweaked, or even created entirely from scratch. The Workflow app does take some time to get used to, but once you get the hang of it, it can save you a lot of time (and energy) scrolling through your phone.
