The Last of Us: Part III has been the subject of numerous rumors and speculative discussions over the past year or so. A third full installment of the main story is reportedly not planned at this time, but Naughty Dog is currently working on a large standalone, multiplayer game set in the same universe. In an interview with BuzzFeed, Neil Druckmann addressed the subject, saying that if a Part 3 can’t be arranged, the studio may decide to move on from The Last of Us.
Druckmann acknowledges that many people are speculating about The Last of Us Part 3 and whether it will actually happen or not. “All I could say is that Naughty Dog is extremely fortunate to have Sony as our publisher. They have encouraged us along the way to pursue our passions, so people shouldn’t assume that just because something is popular that we are under obligation to create a sequel. That is not true.”
He goes on to say that Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was one of its most lucrative releases, but that the company was still able to leave the franchise and follow its passions. The decision to continue playing The Last of Us is ours to make, according to Druckmann.
He says the team will make it happen if Naughty Dog “can come up with a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love.” In that case, “Part 2 has a very strong ending and that will be the end.”
Therefore, the future of the series is unknown aside from The Last of Us Factions or whatever the multiplayer game’s name may be. You never know, but Druckmann did mention a while back that an outline for a potential third game had been written.
Do you think The Last of Us should have another main game, or should it be the end of the series?
