Today marks the release of the DualSense Edge, Sony’s official “pro” controller for the PS5, and complaints about its shortened battery have already surfaced online. The premium pad, which sells for $199.99 / £209.99, actually has a smaller battery than the basic DualSense, according to a report from Budd’s Controllers on Twitter. Smaller batteries don’t necessarily mean shorter battery life; it all depends on the type of battery and how it’s used. However, recently released DualSense Edge reviews indicate that this controller doesn’t last long when you’re playing without a power source.

Due to its own relatively short battery life, the standard DualSense has already drawn a lot of flak. A full charge will typically provide eight hours of use, but this number may drop significantly depending on how a game makes use of the controller’s features, like haptic feedback.
The problem is that the DualSense Edge’s initial usage time averages about six hours. This is what we discovered in our own hardware review of the DualSense Edge, and it is consistent with what other people have told us.
In essence, what we have here is an expensive controller with a shorter battery life than its standard counterpart, which is a marketing coup. The DualSense Edge is obviously targeted at enthusiasts, but this kind of superficial dissatisfaction may turn off many potential buyers.
What are your thoughts on this? Is a shorter battery life an issue, or do you just connect your DualSense to your PS5 via a wired connection to play?
