Blizzard has teased a new Overwatch event called “King’s Row Uprising.” It seems the publisher will reveal more details about the mysterious event on April 12. The “tease” itself is a 20-second video about a file on “King’s Row Uprising” that is about to be declassified. On the bottom right of the video, it appears a character may also get a new skin. The publisher did not reveal more beyond this point. Players can look at the tweet from Blizzard and see fan reactions for themselves. Regardless, it seems this event will bring more parts of the in-game plot to light. Interestingly, whatever this event may uncover may also give hints to the title’s direction with its story.
However, perhaps the more interesting nature of the tease is its timeframe. The “Uprising” was “entered” into record seven years ago. This means the event may actually be a “blast to the past.” Players may see how characters in the game may have had a hand in the “Uprising,” whatever the event’s subject may truly be. This presents outstanding development for the game’s plot as not a lot of lore was released by Overwatch except for off-game media. These include comics, character teases, and special trailers. An actual in-game event detailing a past circumstance can boost the game’s popularity.
Overwatch: King’s Row “Uprising”
Overwatch players will remember that King’s Road is a Hybrid map in the game. The map combines elements of the Assault and Escort game modes. This means players will first take and defend capture points in the map. The map’s endgame forces players to escort a payload from one point of the map to a designated objective. However, while this is a staple mode for players, the “Uprising” nature of the new event is mysterious in itself.
Meta-wise, King’s Row is one of the first maps available in the game’s beta. This is also one of the first maps to be developed by the title’s team. This implies the map may have some sentimental value to the staff, hence the event. The map is a “cosmopolitan neighborhood” inside the city of London. However, its elegant appearance overshadows the conflict between Omnics, or the game’s sentient robots, and humans. Meanwhile, below King’s Row is something called “the Underground,” where omnics currently reside. However, it seems this is where conflicts begin to escalate. The “Uprising” may in fact refer to a past revolution courtesy of the oppressed Omnics.
Lore-wise, King’s Row is the site of one of the game’s cinematic teasers. Tekharta Mondatta was assassinated in this area while giving a speech about Omnic-human peace. In-game hero Tracer tried to stop the assassination, but it was too late. The assassin, in-game character Widow, is still at large. This may have formed tensions between the two. Interested players can look at the video below for the said cinematic. This also explains Tracer’s potential involvement with the “Uprising” event. Unfortunately, only Blizzard can fully explain the details to the new Overwatch tease. Regardless, fans should be ready for a new lore-related event.
