As had once been previously speculated, the next entry into the famed zombie-killing series, Dead Rising 4 will indeed be a timed exclusive for one year. This comes after the initial reveal at Microsoft’s E3 conference this year where Dead Rising 4 was unveiled. In the announcement trailer and further promotional material for both the game and the Xbox One, Dead Rising 4 was lacking any indication that it would be exclusive for Xbox and Windows 10. The last entry into the series was initially an exclusive to the Xbox One before later coming to Windows 10 which, combined with fake box art that implied it was exclusive, led to speculation that the newest entry would follow the trend and be a Microsoft Exclusive.
Despite this speculation and Microsoft’s unusual silence on the matter, new evidence on the matter has arisen to show that Dead Rising 4 is, in-fact, a timed exclusive for both Xbox One and Windows 10. The evidence comes from Mirror games journalist Ryan Brown. Ryan Brown contacted a Capcom rep and said this;
“Capcom rep says that Dead Rising 4 is a 1-year timed exclusive for MS.”
This seemed like pretty conclusive evidence but then Capcom Vancouver went on to say;
“You’ll be able to play it first on Xbox One and Windows 10.”
This seems to directly prove that Dead Rising 4 will eventually release for other consoles such as the PS4 and Steam. The direct amount of time that it is exclusive for was also revealed with Dead Rising being exclusive to Windows 10 for 90 days before being allowed to distribute elsewhere, most likely Steam, and for a year on Xbox One. This means that within a year PlayStation owners and Steam players alike could be playing Dead Rising 4.
One has to wonder why both Capcom and Microsoft have been avoiding the topic of whether it is a timed exclusive or not. Only now have Microsoft actually released a statement clarifying the situation, officially telling us that Dead Rising 4 is indeed a timed exclusive.
“Dead Rising 4′ on Xbox One is developed by Capcom and will be published in partnership with Microsoft. Fans will be able to play ‘Dead Rising 4’ first on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC this December. It will remain a Windows 10 exclusive for the first 90 days and console exclusive on Xbox One for one year. We’ve had a close and longstanding relationship with Capcom including the launch of Dead Rising as an Xbox 360 exclusive and Dead Rising 3 as an Xbox One exclusive. We’re thrilled to partner with Capcom once again to help bring their ambitious vision for Dead Rising 4 to life.”
Giving the franchise a new lease of life on a new console is a fantastic idea, opening up the franchise to more and more people and ensuring that the game gets the sales and reviews that it deserves. It doesn’t seem to make much sense as to why Microsoft would allow a partnership like this considering the negative response to a similar deal made with Rise of the Tomb Raider. As a big fan of the series, I think it can only be a good thing for more and more people to experience it.
Dead Rising 4 releases for Xbox One and Windows 10 this December and will release on other consoles within a year.
