Sony have announced that they will be releasing an upgraded PS4 in the near future. News about this console arose on the gaming news site Kotaku, after sources reported that Sony were talking to developers about creating games that are compatible with the upgraded hardware. It has been most commonly referred to as the PS4 Neo, and will feature an upgraded GPU and a power boost to support prettier and smoother gameplay and additionally provide developers with more freedom in creating ambitious VR games. The new PS4 will also be able to run games in 4K, so we’ll be able to see some brilliant looking games, as long as you have the TV or monitor to honour its capabilities. This is why the new console has been deemed by CEO Andrew House as appealing to the “hard-core gamers”.
There will be no exclusive games for the PS4 Neo, and it will run all the games that the standard PS4 can. However, they will be releasing patches that give the previously released titles the boost they require for the PS4 Neo, and we’ll be able to see them in a new light. The console will retail at around $399 (£279.89), so players will be getting a better console for around the same price, give or take £10 or so. Perhaps the most important part of this upgrade is the support and compatibility with Playstation VR, as we will likely see more of the developing platform at E3 2016, and players will be interested to see how far they can take it, and possibly some hints as to what these future consoles can achieve alongside it.
With Microsoft talking about an upgraded Xbox One, we would think that Sony would have pressure on them to show off the new console at E3. However, in an interview with the Financial Times, Executive Vice President of Sony Andrew House has stated that the console will not be featured in E3, Stating that ‘we want to ensure we have a full range of the best experiences on the new system that we can showcase in their entirety’. It would be safe to assume that we will be hearing more about this upgraded console at Gamescom later this year. Anticipation for Microsoft showcasing their new console might create some tension between the two rivals, as Playstation fans will be left seemingly in the dark about any new hardware throughout E3. However, fans can be rest assured that there will be a new console and we should still see it being released around the same time as the new Xbox.
