A mere month after Yakuza 5 was finally released in the west, Sega has dropped the first trailer for the upcoming sequel, Yakuza 6. The trailer is under two minutes long and shows off some highly-detailed environments, visual upgrades, and new gameplay mechanics.
The first forty seconds showcase the game’s use of real-time lighting rendering in some impressive photo-realistic settings such as a damp and busy street, and a brightly-lit convenience store. We are then treated to sequence in which the series’ protagonist, Kazuma Kiryu delivers a brutal beat-down on a couple of mob bosses. Harnessing the power of the PlayStation 4, the environments are gorgeously rendered, the reaction times from fights have been dramatically improved, and the character models are so detailed that we can pinpoint all the dimples and lines across each character’s face. The trailer concludes by demonstrating the game’s new free-running mechanic where Kiryu smoothly navigates through a series of obstacles. From squeezing through narrow passages to leaping from rooftop to rooftop, Kiryu’s actions are remarkably fluid and seamless. Whilst the trailer was technically impressive, very little was revealed regarding the game’s plot. Other than a confirmed guest appearance from acclaimed Japanese movie director Takeshi Kitano, details about the game have been kept under wraps.
Yakuza 6 was originally announced back at the 2015 Tokyo Game show in September as a PS4 exclusive title. Whilst localisation plans for a western release are not confirmed just yet, the game is expected to launch in Japan in late 2016. In addition to Yakuza 6, Sony also announced that a remake of the first Yakuza game will also be launched sometime during 2016.
