Last month, it was reported on the Dead Or Alive Facebook page that Dead Or Alive Xtreme 3 will not see a Western release. Now the President of Sony himself, Shuhei Yoshida, has confirmed that the game won’t be coming to the west anytime soon. This marks the first game in the series to not be released in Western territories.
In an interview with 4gamer, Yoshida discussed the Japanese gaming market, how it has reached ‘maturity’, and how they’ve had to be conscious of the overseas game marketplace when releasing their games. The interview soon turned to the recent controversy of Dead Or Alive Xtreme 3 not being released to the west due to western issues regarding depictions of females in video games.
In response to this controversy, Yoshida replied, “It’s due to cultural differences. The West has it’s own thinking about how to depict women in games media which is different from Japan […] Speaking personally, if it is a representation acceptable to the general people in Japan, I wouldn’t be concerned about it in Japan. It’s a difficult problem.” Yoshida proceeded to draw comparisons between the Dead Or Alive Xtreme 3 debacle with the criticism levelled at Dragon’s Crown, “I really liked Dragon’s Crown for PS3 and PS Vita, but the title was harshly criticized and received some very low review scores.”
In response to the previous comments made on the Dead Or Alive Facebook page, Koei Tecmo released an official statement on the issue whilst distancing itself from all the controversy.
Sorry to all the Western Dead Or Alive fans out there, the game will be released in Japan only on February 25 2016 under two different titles. The game will be launched on the PlayStation 4 as Dead Or Alive Xtreme 3: Fortune whilst the game will be called Dead Or Alive Xtreme 3: Venus for the PlayStation Vita.
