We recently got a long-awaited teaser trailer for Shenmue 3 from Yu Suzuki, showing the game off in action for the first time since its announcement in 2015. While the footage shown was definitely promising, some were quick to note that the character models weren’t quite where they needed to be. Don’t worry, as the developer is fully aware of that.
Yu Suzuki recently did an interview with Game Spark, and the topic of the teaser trailer’s character models came to light. He said that “Shenhua, Ryo, and the other characters are mostly temporary. Shenhua still has to be fixed up a bit.”
Higher-quality character models are in the process of being finalized, but executive producer Hideaki Morishita wasn’t able to have them ready in time for the trailer. The idea to put this trailer out despite the game not necessarily being ready for one had more to do with the recent signing of the contract with Deep Silver, as they wanted to show something to commemorate the announcement. Facial expressions also haven’t been implemented yet, which explains the wooden expressions from the trailer.
There are many other tidbits on the game that have been revealed, which are detailed below:
- Shenmue 3 will not have a multiplayer component, and is being developed completely as a single-player experience. DLC for the game is being planned, but no information could be given yet on what it may include.
- Suzuki is trying to get as many of the original voice actors as possible, but some of them have retired from the profession altogether. One example is the voice of Shenhua, which means they will need to audition for a new actor to fill that role. They already have the original Ryo voice actor signed on, however.
- The game’s length is estimated to be around 30 hours, though that could change.
- He had no comment on whether or not Shenmue 1 and 2 would be getting remastered, as those games are the property of Sega.
- Suzuki would like to make Shenmue 4 after Shenmue 3, as the third game will not conclude the story. The overall story of the series has many chapters, and he does not want to compromise the vision just to ensure that it has an ending.
Shenmue 3 is set to launch in the second half of 2018 for PlayStation 4 and PC.
