Shenmue 3 was originally revealed during Sony’s press conference at E3 2015, but since then we’ve gotten very little new information on the game. There have been some developer updates through the actual Kickstarter page, but everything shown has been very minor. Some have hoped that a big reveal could be coming at this year’s E3, but that won’t be the case.
Developer Ys Net confirmed recently that they are deep within the game’s development, and will not be taking time off to do game events. “While our schedule has yet to be finalized, we will be devoting June to game development and as a result, will unfortunately not be participating in any game shows. On the other hand, we look forward to bringing you our monthly updates and hope you do too!”
If there’s any good news to be taken from this announcement, it’s that they revealed a new character that will be appearing in the game. He’s a buff guy with long hair and wears suspenders, and will likely be dueling with Ryo Hazuki at least once when the game finally releases. The video doesn’t show any footage of him actually in action, but instead shows concept art and his 3D model.
While it is of course a bummer to hear that the highly-anticipated Shenmue 3 will not be appearing at E3, it’s not the biggest surprise considering the lack of meaningful updates we’ve gotten. Despite the game still targeting a late 2017 release, all signs point to the game being delayed into 2018. Rumors earlier this year suggested that the first two games were set to be remastered and released this year, which would be a great way to get newcomers caught up on the series and long-time fans a new way to play their favorite games.
Whenever Shenmue 3 does finally release it will be available for PlayStation 4 and PC.
