Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, says he believes Destiny 2 will be similar to World of Warcraft. A quote he shared with Gamastruta during an interview about Scorpio was “But you know, Destiny 2‘s gonna be one of these games that I expect five, six, seven years from now, people are still going to be playing that game. It’s going to be a little bit like WoW. Which you know, whatever its been, 10 years later, 15 years later, millions of people play the game.”
Phil Spencer also states that the reason he picks Destiny 2 as an example is because he has at least 600 hours into the MMO shooter. Another reason he made the statement was because he feels that a lot of games now have long lifespans and that having support for those games is important to the ecosystem. He also refers to the Xbox Scorpio as “multi-generational hardware”.
This isn’t the first time Microsoft has talked about the new upcoming console as just a half step in a generation. Head of marketing, Aaron Greenberg, in a conversation with Engadget had this to say on the Scorpio: “For us, we think the future is without console generations; we think that the ability to build a library, a community, to be able to iterate with the hardware — we’re making a pretty big bet on that with Project Scorpio. We’re basically saying, ‘This isn’t a new generation; everything you have continues forward and it works.’ We think of this as a family of devices.”
Project Scorpio is set to be unveiled this E3 with a launch coming this Fall. More info about the unveiling at E3 can be found here.
Destiny 2 is scheduled for a release later this year on September 8th, with that game’s gameplay reveal happening on May 18th. The Destiny 2 trailer called “Rally the Troops” can be found here.
