Microsoft has posted in the Xbox insider dashboard today that it is going to be offering self-service digital returns. This applies to both Xbox and Windows 10 games, finally giving gamers a way to take back something that didn’t live up to their expectations.
The company said “You’ve spoken; we’ve listened. In support of offering gamers the freedom of choice, we’re making changes to the Microsoft Store purchase experience by offering customers a simple way to instantly return digital products like games and apps through account.microsoft.com. When a game or app leaves you wanting more, we’re here to help. Self-service refunds on Xbox One and Windows 10 provide a quick, simple way of returning a digital product.”
To request a self-service refund, first you have to navigate to account.microsoft.com and sign-in. After that, from the top menu bar, select Payment & billing > Order history. Finally, navigate to a purchased game or app, and then select Request a refund.
This news is huge, because previously in the console space once you bought a game digitally there was no way to get rid of it. This has left a lot of players feeling burned by releases that were pre-ordered digitally, without any hope of getting their money back. This return service looks to be very similar to the one that Steam offers currently for players.
Currently Steam offers a self service digital return that is a guarantee to get your money back if the game has been played less than two hours and is within two weeks of purchase. Even after this time-frame is up, the company is still very lenient with giving customers their money back.
Hopefully with Steam and Xbox giving players the ability to have digital returns, other companies in the console space will follow suit. Currently with PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch there is no way to request a refund for games and apps that have been purchased digitally.
