Gametrailers, the venerable videogame review and commentary site, will be shutting down today after thirteen years online. The site was one of the first major sites to focus on video content, and was known not just for it’s coverage of pre-release content, but for it’s ongoing original content such as commentaries, ‘let’s play’-style programmes and in-depth previews and reviews. It was also one of the first major sites to fully embrace the use of Twitch. The unfortunate surprise announcement came today via Twitter:
After 13 years, GameTrailers is closing down today. Thank you for your continued support over the years. It has been an adventure.

Gametrailers was founded in 2002 by Brandon Jones and Geoff Grotz before being bought out by MTV three years later. MTV merged the with several other digital properties into a subsidiary company, Spike Digital Entertainment, in 2007 before selling the property to Defy Media in 2014. Shortly after their purchase of the property, Defy fired the majority of the senior staff – about half of everybody working there at the time. While the site has continued to produce quality content since then, it seems like this is very much the end of the road. Gametrailers’ final livestream is available to view here. It will be missed.
