Bethesda Game Studios’ Todd Howard will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at next month’s 16th annual Game Developer’s Conference. The award recognizes ‘the career and achievements of a developer who has made an indelible impact on the craft of game development and games as a whole’. Previous recipients have included such luminaries as Richard Garriott, Shigeru Miyamoto, Sid Meier, Hideo Kojima, John Carmack, Peter Molyneux, Warren Spector, Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk.
A Pennsylvania native, Howard has been a desinger and producer for Bethesda Game Studios since 1994, when it was known as Bethesda Softworks. He had applied and been rejected for positions twice by the company before securing a design role on Terminator: Future Shock. Howard has worked on all of Bethesda’s main Elder Scrolls titles, notably as project lead and lead designer on Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim, as well as Fallout 3 and Fallout 4. He also directed the company’s first mobile game, last year’s Fallout Shelter. Howard’s games have consistently received both critical and commercial success and been cited as gold standards for their open world design and encouragement of player agency.
In a press statement, GDC General Manager Meggan Scavio said that “The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series present gamers with fully realized worlds filled with vast landscapes, and mystery at every corner. We’re proud to honor the visionary developer for his leadership in creating these universes… When you’re completely captivated by these detailed worlds, it’s easy to forget the level of dedicated work and creativity that went into every square inch. This award reflects on the amazing craft of Todd Howard and his team in making worlds as real as anything on Earth.”
Howard will be presented with the award at the Game Developer’s Choice Awards ceremony on March 16th.
