Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still happening according to creator Michel Ancel.
During a gameplay session at Double Fine, Michel Ancel didn’t exactly confirm the sequel, but he did talk about it in the present tense when Double Fine’s Greg Rice asked about the game. The original game was released on PlayStation 2 and the GameCube and received very strong reviews from critics. The game certainly has a hardcore following, but didn’t sell as many as they would have liked. It was originally planned to be a trilogy.
Ubisoft confirmed back in 2008 that a sequel was in development. There were many images and character designs released, but the game then seemed to disappear. Then in 2011 it was revealed that the game was now being developed for next gen consoles. A high definition version of Beyond Good and Evil was released that year on PSN and Xbox Live.
Then in 2014 Ubisoft announced that the sequel was very much in development:
“In many ways, BG&E is an inimitable game – it appeals to all generations of gamers and is an inspiration behind many of Ubisoft Montpellier’s past and future games. It’s still far too early to give many details about this new title, but what we can say is that while Michel and the team at Ubisoft Montpellier are working with the core tenets of BG&E, they’re developing something that aspires to push past the boundaries of a proverbial sequel and leverages next-gen technologies to deliver a truly surprising, innovative and exceptional game. The entire team is excited about the direction this extremely ambitious project is taking, and we’ll have more to share later, as it progresses.”
During the developer let’s play at Double Fine Ancel was asked why the game has such a passionate following, and he spoke about the energy that went into creating it.
“I think it’s that the time and the energy we spent on Beyond Good and Evil is still there. There’s still something about it. When I look at it I see all the work, the AI trying to follow you, the cinematics, the mix of sound, music and colours. It’s all still there.”
Beyond Good & Evil 2 has been one of those games that has been rumoured many times over the years, and it certainly looks like the sequel will appear at some point in the not too distant future.
