Far Cry Primal’s February release date is creeping up on us, bow in hand, and Ubisoft have released a new story trailer, this time shining a torch on the title’s villain Ull. You can tell he’s the villain because A) the trailer flat out tells you to kill him and B) because his face looks like it’s recently met a belt sander in a passionate embrace. The trailer features a lot of gameplay footage but not a lot of actual gameplay, but it nevertheless sets the scene in fairly bombastic fashion. Take a look below.

Despite Ubisoft’s desire to annualise everything, I admire their willingness to push the franchise in some interesting new directions, and the stone age setting holds some interesting possibilities. The complete removal of firearms will have some serious effects on the gameplay, as even with bows and spears adding a ranged element, the combat will by necessity need to be much more up close and personal. In my dreams, this means Ubisoft have copied the excellent, and never fully replicated, melee combat from Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Ubisoft, you own the rights to that game! Make this happen!
The animal-taming mechanic will apparently form a cornerstone of the experience as well, and from what the trailer suggests, this extends to owls which is obviously fantastic. Bears, wolves saber-tooth tigers and more will be available to both hunt and tame in your tribe’s fight for survival. And they’ve even worked in a shaman for a drug sequence in true Far Cry style. This time, rather than mushrooms or whatever you took in the Himalayas, you’re drinking blood and eye balls from a hollowed-out skull, much like you would on a Saturday night in east London.
Far Cry Primal is set to be a full-size release, not a bite-sized side story, a-la Far Cry 3’s dumb-but-amazing Blood Dragon, and is scheduled to launch of February 23rd.
