Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’s online component called Metal Gear Online was previously only available on the console versions of the game, though that will be changing very soon. Today marks the beginning of the game’s limited beta phase for PC, with the beta itself scheduled to begin around 10PM PT. Metal Gear Online was originally set to launch for PC around the same time that it did for consoles, though it ended up getting a pretty sizable delay in order to make sure everything functioned properly. Considering all of the catastrophic launches we’ve been seeing recently on PC, this was probably a very good move on the developer’s part.
The news of the beta starting today was revealed on Steam where the following message was posted: “The real Kept You Waiting… Since the delay announcement last year, MGO fans have been waiting patiently for the latest update for their favorite online multiplayer to arrive on their favorite platform, the indomitable PC! A strong man doesn’t need to read the future. He simply needs to wait for MGO on PC. That day is nearly here, as recently announced via the Konami Twitch Channel [www.twitch.tv], players can opt in and download the Beta release of Metal Gear Online January 12th, 10PM PT. While that’s our target time, there’s a chance it’ll slip by an hour or two as we implement this awaited update, but rest assure we will be here for support and launch as planned. Unfortunately as long as you follow me, you’ll never see the…wait no you did, yay it worked out! It’s been a long wait, and we absolutely appreciate the support we’ve received not just from MGO fans but also our passionate Steam community. Seriously, you all are amazing! What little time we have left we will spend playing MGO. Thank you for taking this long journey with us. -KJPDev”
Metal Gear Online has remained a popular feature for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, keeping the game’s fanbase going strong even though the game launched several months ago. The component features multiplayer that fully utilizes all of the unique mechanics that are specific to the Metal Gear Solid series, with the biggest twist being that of the Fulton Recovery System. Where most multiplayer shooters have you kill enemies to score points, Metal Gear Online rewards you far more for sneaking up behind an enemy, knocking them out and then shipping them out of the level via Fulton Recovery. It’s a fantastic twist on the standard multiplayer shooter that remains a lot of fun to this very day.
