The Oculus Rift enjoyed a very successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012, as it raised over $2 million from the help of 9,522 backers. As a token of appreciation, Oculus has announced that they will be giving all Kickstarter backers who pledged at the development kit level a free “Kickstarter Edition” of the final build of the Oculus Rift. While the news may be expected by some, considering the Rift and the campaign was bought out by Facebook the details weren’t exactly clear regarding what the original backers would be getting for their money.
The company posted a new message on the Rift’s Kickstarter page, with the following being a snippet from the post: “As a small token of our appreciation for your support, all Kickstarter backers who pledged for a Rift development kit will get a free Kickstarter Edition Oculus Rift! And like all Rift pre-order purchasers, you’ll receive a bundled copy of Lucky’s Tale and EVE: Valkyrie. To claim your free Rift, fill out the survey you’ll receive from Kickstarter before February 1, 2016 and provide a shipping address that is located in one of the 20 countries Rift is launching in. For those who don’t live in one of those 20 countries, we’re working on an alternative, and you can let us know your preference in the form. You were there at the beginning of our journey — we couldn’t have done it without you. Today marks a new chapter.”
Tomorrow marks the day when the first pre-orders for the Oculus Rift will go live, though a release date and price point for the Rift still has not been shared. However, both pieces of information are expected to go live at the same time the pre-orders do. Estimations for the exact price of the whole package are wildly different, with some saying that both a Rift and a PC powerful enough to run it could cost somewhere around $1,500. The headset itself, though, has been estimated to be priced around the $300-$400 range.
