As a reminder for those who don’t know, Steam winter sale is shown to start December 22nd. This would be the right time to get great deals on games. It would be a good idea to add any desired games to your wishlist. Steam will send an email if any games from your wishlist are on sale this holiday season. It’s a good opportunity to purchase games for yourself or as a gift.
Paypal announced the start date of the winter sale for this year. Remember to purchase any games you may want during that time. Since Valve decided daily deals and flash sales won’t be offered in the future.
Daily deals are simple to understand. Flash sales are shorter duration Steam sales that last for limited periods at steep discounts. Both have been regular and standard featured Steam sales, but it appears they will no longer be offered. Valve is looking to do something different with their sales.
“In past sale events, we’ve asked for two discounts—a duration discount that runs for the length of the sale, and a feature discount that runs in the event that a game is featured on the front page. This year, to optimize the sale for customers and to allow us to feature and recommend your products in more ways to more customers, we’re asking for just one discount, to run the length of the sale,” the message from Valve says. “We’ll still be highlighting top games on the front page for 24-48 hour spans, but those products will stay at their most competitive discount, before and after being featured. It’s not a major change, but it does make the sale a lot more valuable for customers, and it allows us to build sale tools that highlight and recommend products all sale long, instead of just during front page features.”
There is an upside to this change. Without flash sales, pricing will be more consistent. There can he comfort in knowing that pricing won’t change when I check back on a game I wanted 12 hours later. A game that I bought for 10.99 won’t drop to 5.99 within a few refreshes after already purchased. Our Christmas gift from Valve appears to be lack of buyers remorse, which is a good thing.
The Winter Sale will begin at 10 am PST on December 22 and end at 10 am PST on January 4.
