Rockfish Games, well known for their Galaxy on Fire series under Fishlab Games released the first gameplay trailer for Everspace. Everspace is a arcade style space shooter with a strong focus on action gameplay. Rockfish Games proudly sells itself on that point, urging players that it isn’t another space shooting simulator. In trailers it can help to differ between pre-rendered cut scenes and actual gameplay. The visual graphics look gorgeous and the physics realistic.
The crew from Fishlab Games has joined Rockfish Games. Fishlab created the entire Galaxy on Fire series and are known for their high-end 3D games for smartphones and tablets. It looks like the old team from Fishlab has no problem transitioning to the PC. Everspace is more ambitious than GOF’s mission-based dogfighting—developers Rockfish describe it as a “3D space shooter with rogue-like elements and non-linear storytelling”, and they’ve certainly upped the visual loveliness as well.
Those are some pretty impressive looking graphics. Rockfish claims the game will focus on AAA quality graphics with easy-to-pick-up gameplay. Hopefully those who aren’t familiar with rouge like shooters can pick up and play it. I never was a big fan of space shooters growing up because the technology wasn’t there. The trailer feels and looks like space. It really looks like something I can get behind. Rockfish claims that each run of Everspace, the player will experience different situations. Rockfish’s page claims, “..As a pilot, you need to make a lot of decisions. Each and every decision will effect your personal quest to your ultimate goal.” It’s unclear for now what that means, perhaps depending on how you play, the story will differ greatly. It is possible that they might only have minor changes for each decision, perhaps similar to Telltale adventure games? The gameplay hasn’t shown much off other then the graphical capabilities of the Unreal Engine 4.
Kickstarter backers are set to receive a playable alpha build in March—the rest of us will have to wait until the full release in October 2016.
