Though it has been struck down, there is still a chance that Star Wars 1313 could become something more powerful than we can possibly imagine. The third-person action game, which debuted way back at E3 2012, showed some serious promise, but had it’s production halted indefinitely as part of the Disney buyout of Lucasfilm. However Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy has recently suggested that there is a chance that they may revisit the title in the future.
Speaking with Slashfilm in regard to the canceled live action TV series Star Wars: Underworld, Kennedy herself brought up Star Wars 1313, saying that the material developed was something they would “very much like to explore… Our attitude is, we don’t want to throw any of that stuff away. It’s gold. And it’s something we’re spending a lot of time looking at, pouring through, discussing, and we may very well develop those things further. We definitely want to.”
Star Wars 1313 was set to be third-person action shooter based around the exploits of a young Boba Fett, as he explored the corrupt underbelly of Coroscant, on the titular Level 1313. While Kennedy’s statements should be taken with a full cup of salt, Disney’s desire to dig into a grittier, dirtier, less Jedi-centric side of the Star Wars universe does fall in line with their ‘anthology’ film strategy; releasing films set in the same universe but not directly linked to the main saga’s plot. Fett has long been a fan-favourite character and while there has been talk of a movie of his own, reportedly Disney have struggled with finding a way to make the ruthless bounty hunter into a hero in a PG-13 film.
A mature-rated video game feels like a perfect fit for the concept. Time will tell if there’s any weight behind the statements, but it certainly sounds like 1313 is still something on people’s minds.
