Jack the Ripper, the first piece of DLC for historical murder simulator Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, is set to launch next week. Set during the year of the Ripper murders, 1888, the story will focus exclusively on Evie Frye, now forty years old, who is returning to London after a twenty year absence. The killings of at least five east London prostitutes have been attributed to Jack the Ripper, whose conclusive identity still eludes historians to this day.
The Ripper has been a source for some fantastic works of fiction in the past, such as Alan Moore’s superlative graphic novel From Hell, and it will be interesting to see what Ubisoft do with the figure (spoiler alert: he’s probably a Templar). However, there is a certain degree of narrative dissonance in seeing a character like Evie, a trained assassin who by this point in her life has killed likely hundreds of people, recoil in horror at the sight of a dead body and set out to stop ‘history’s most mysterious killer’. Pot, kettle, black etc.
Jack the Ripper will be available on PS4 and Xbox One on December 15th, with the PC version following on December 22nd. The DLC is also available as part of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate‘s season pass, which will also include two further packs, The Last Maharajah and Streets of London.
