After an impressive success with this year’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Polish developer CD Projekt Red is looking forward towards its next ambitious project, Cyberpunk 2077. Sure, the game is far ahead, and the devs are still working on updates and content for The Witcher 3. The critically acclaimed game featuring Geralt of Rivia has already sold over 6 million copies this year, and has prompted a big screen adaptation. That being said, it’s not a huge financial success, at least not according to CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kicinski, who explained that the $81 million budget game wasn’t hugely profitable, despite being a “good investment”.
Kicinski spoke about the company’s future plans in an interview on the Polish TV channel TVN24, later translated by Gamepressure. The CEO went on to give details about CDPR’s future endeavors. While previously stating that Witcher 3 is the final piece in the Geralt saga, he now mentioned that anything’s possible, since “it’s not like we’re forgetting about this brand” and “We work within this universe for over a dozen years now and I don’t think it’s going to be the end of it”. Having said that, it’s clear that the company’s focus now rests on its announced but barely detailed project, Cyberpunk 2077. “The project is even more ambitious than we first planned” he explained, adding that the game has to be an even success than The Wild Hunt. It seems Mr. Kicinski is aiming for “the biggest commercial successes in the world”, meaning there’s a lot of work to be done.
Sadly, the interview didn’t contain many details about what Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be about, just that it’s going to be bigger and better than The Witcher 3, which can only put a smile on our face, considering Geralt’s adventure this year has proven to be one of the best RPG experience in recent years. Geralt’s saga will continue with the game’s second expansion pack, entitled Blood and Wine, due towards the summer of 2016. Until then, we’re left with either playing The Witcher 3, or taking a look at the only Cyberpunk 2077 related footage we have – its original trailer.
