Since the game’s debut last year, Like a Dragon: Ishin! has received mainly favorable reviews. After all, this is a remake of a critically acclaimed episode that was never distributed outside of Japan. While everyone is anticipating yet another gripping RGG Studio adventure, one of the game’s new mechanics (which is highlighted in the most recent trailer) has some fans a little concerned.
The ‘Trooper Cards’ system, which wasn’t in the original game, essentially allows you to gather and level up unique fighting skills. From what we’ve seen, these abilities are typically exaggerated, with Ryoma, the main character, hurling fireballs and laser beams at his enemies.
It’s important to understand that the game’s standard combat system has not been replaced by Trooper Cards. With your sword, gun, or fists, you can still easily dispatch thugs; in fact, it appears that you are not required to equip the cards at all.
There is concern that the way combat is balanced now revolves around the use of Trooper Cards. It’s assumed that if you want to level the playing field, you’ll probably have to equip some cards and go Super Saiyan because boss enemies, in particular, can now use their own special attacks and abilities. There are also more overt worries that having such bizarre techniques takes away from the serious tone of the game (in the main story, at least).
We can completely comprehend where these potential criticisms are coming from, but ultimately, we’ll have to wait for Ishin! to be released before passing judgment on anything. The game will debut on February 21st, less than a month from now.
How do you interpret these cards?
