Recently Nintendo revealed the Nintendo Switch Lite, which is a cheaper model of the Switch console that is for mobile gaming only. We had been hearing rumors for many months now that the big N would be releasing new versions of their hit Switch console, but the announcement many were hoping for was a more powerful Switch Pro. Considering there won’t be any more Switch consoles coming this year, when will it launch?
Well, we know that Nintendo will be releasing both the Switch Lite and a base model Switch with improved battery life this year and that’s it. However, next year is going to be a huge year for gaming, as both the PS5 and the new Xbox will be launching. These are going to be graphical powerhouses, being much beefier consoles than the PS4 and Xbox One. Considering both of the latter consoles are already more powerful than Switch, that means that the next consoles from Sony and Microsoft will truly put the current Switch to shame from a power standpoint.
Having said that, it would make perfect sense for Nintendo to release a more powerful Pro model next year. To avoid the limelight being taken off of them completely with the launch of next generation Sony and Microsoft consoles, Nintendo could come out with the Switch Pro that offers even more stellar visuals on the go. The company already has the market cornered on that front, so if they can do something that can show a significant boost over the base Switch model it will be a huge win.
Whatever ends up happening in the console wars next year, the fact of the matter is that Nintendo really doesn’t have much to worry about. They’ve positioned themselves in the console market in a spot that sits outside of the PlayStation and Xbox battle, offering cheaper consoles that are more focused on pure fun rather cutting edge visuals. It’s a strategy that has worked very well with the Switch’s at home and on-the go approach, and a release of the Switch Pro should do plenty to keep the company’s success streak going in 2020 and beyond.
