Studio Wildcard has announced during the Game Developers Conference today that Ark: Survival Evolved is coming to Nintendo Switch. While the company didn’t provide an exact release date, they did say that it will be sometime during fall. More information on that will likely be coming as we get closer to summer.
This is certainly a surprising announcement, considering that the developer has said in the past that a Switch port would require a lot of work. However, considering how successful the console has been and all of the surprising third-party support it has acquired, it definitely makes sense for the developer to get their game on the console.
The real question will be how the game will run both docked and undocked on the Switch. While there are lots of big third-party games that have gotten Switch ports, they often come with some pretty big concessions in order to get the game to run smoothly on the weaker hardware. Ark: Survival Evolved may not be the most demanding game out there, but on the Switch it will definitely need to be properly optimized.
Ark: Survival Evolved is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, with the game coming out of Early Access last year. The game is an action-adventure survival game set in an open world, with players tasked with acquiring items to help them take down enemy humans and creatures. The game has been a big success on those platforms, and now the added portability of the Switch version will add a brand new way to play.
