Nintendo has enjoyed some early success with their new console called the Switch, with its sales being much more impressive than the ill-fated Wii U’s launch sales were. However, we’re now getting more news regarding how the console has been doing overall, and it certainly paints a good picture for its success going forward.
It has been revealed that the Switch is Nintendo’s fastest-selling console in the US ever, which puts it ahead of some very successful consoles from the company. It sold 906,000 units in March, which also resulted in it beating PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for the best-selling console of the month. While the much heavier promotion that Nintendo did for the Switch was certainly part of the reason for the big sales, they also have to thank the extraordinary response that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild received.
Breath of the Wild quickly became one of the highest-reviewed games of all time when it launched with the Switch, which made everyone want to play it immediately. The game sold 925,000 units on the Switch and 460,000 units on Wii U, meaning that it actually sold more Switch copies than their were Switch consoles. This is suggested to be because a portion of buyers were buying more than one copy: one as a collector’s item and the other to actually play. This is something that is pretty common when it comes to the Zelda series, due to people having such a high opinion of it.
Putting its sales side-by-side with the Wii U, the Wii U sold 890,000 units in the US after 41 days. This means that not only did the Switch sell more, but it also did it in a shorter span of time. Of course, the big question will be whether or not the Switch will be able to maintain these sales numbers, as it’s common knowledge that the Wii U sunk very quickly. Nintendo has a decent selection of games that are sprinkled throughout the rest of the year for the console, which will hopefully keep the momentum going strong. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Arms, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Super Mario Odyssey are all slated to launch this year, which should result in some quality games for Switch owners.
