Star Ocean The leaked remake of PS1’s legendary 1998 JRPG, The Second Story R, is coming to PS5 and PS4. This one retains the original’s sprite character models but modernizes the pre-rendered backgrounds in a bold art style. It looks striking. Yukihiro Kajimoto created new character illustrations, and Motoi Sakuraba rearranged the soundtrack.
“[The game] has been revitalized with a charming 2.5D aesthetic that combines beautiful 3D environments with nostalgic 2D pixel characters, offering players both a classic RPG and modern gameplay experience,” the press release states. Players can expect some of the original features that made the original release so memorable alongside brand-new gameplay features like fast-paced, real-time combat and battle mechanics to strategically defeat foes, customizable party progression with an array of skills like Cooking, Art, and Metalcraft, and more.”
Importantly, the game will have three difficulty levels, including Universe Mode for experienced players. Pre-orders include in-game gear and items. The Square Enix Store’s Collector’s Edition includes a soundtrack, art book, and limited edition case. On November 2, 2023, all game versions will be released.
