Pokemon GO is easily one of the biggest games of recent memory, and now developer Niantic has officially announced their followup. The game is called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, which is obviously an adaptation of the immensely popular Harry Potter franchise. The game is currently in development for iOS and Android devices for a 2018 release.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be an Augmented Reality game in a similar vein to that of Pokemon GO, though details on how the game will actually play has not yet been revealed. We do know that the game is being co-developed by Warner Bros. Interactive and its new sub brand called Portkey Games.
Rumors about Niantic developing a Harry Potter game actually surfaced last year, though the developer quickly squashed those rumors. However, it looks like people were on the right track and the developer was simply waiting to announce the game further down the line. It makes sense seeing as the game is still a ways off from release, as we could be looking at another summer release similar to that of Pokemon Go.
Niantic certainly learned a lot from Pokemon Go, especially when it came to all of the technical issues that came as a result of the absolutely massive user base that quickly materialized. Hopefully they are better prepared with Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, because there’s no question that the brand has the potential to also attract a massive audience.
There’s still lots to learn about Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, and we’ll be sure to bring you more information on the game as soon as it becomes available.
