Halloween is just over a couple of weeks away, and many are already celebrating by playing their favorite scary video games, movies and so on. It looks like those who are in the Halloween spirit will have a brand new horror game to try out on the spookiest day of the year, with Stifled set to come to PS4 and PS VR on October 31.
Stifled is described as being a mic-enabled sound-based thriller. The game’s world is pitch black and is only illuminated by the sounds you make, which allows you to navigate and see items and paths close by. Of course, the sounds you make will also alert the enemies hidden in the darkness, meaning that you need to be extremely careful at all times.
The team responsible for the game gave a little more insight into its development, saying “The initial idea for Lurking (the game that would eventual evolve into Stifled) revolved around the use of pitch and volume to explore your surroundings and solve puzzles. Wanting audio to take center stage, we kept our visuals to a simple black and white look, and built a few prototypes testing the mechanic of having boxes in a dark room “light up” when sounds “touched” them. After a few iterations and in a moment of genius, Bryan (Audio Director on both Lurking and Stifled) said: “This is perfect for a horror game.”
They go on to reveal that they completed and released Lurking in March of 2014, where it was fairly successful and encouraged them to turn it into a full-fledged game. Production on Stifled began in August of that year, and with VR on the horizon they reached out to Sony in order to obtain PS VR development kits. The results of all that hard work will now be releasing later this month.
