John Kelly is the White House chief of staff. And you’d think a guy like him is pretty careful and concerned about his privacy. Just like the rest of us. But it seems like he has been caught off guard. His personal iPhone might have been compromised. When the IT security team from the White House’s West Wing looked at it, it was clear something was not right. For months, Kelly’s phone was hacked, even before he became chief of staff. Which means his private conversations, e-mails and messages were read by someone else, too.
Ouch! That’s never a good thing. But when it comes to a guy of John Kelly’s caliber, it’s even more worrying. Because his not just an Average Joe, after all. He is the chief of staff. He’s close to the U.S. President. He is part of Donald Trump’s entourage. And when your phone is that vulnerable, you’re vulnerable as well. Everything you say can be intercepted by a third party. And while it may not be of utmost importance or top secret, it’s still a problem.
Your privacy should be only your business, not someone else’s! Guess John Kelly needs to be more careful with his gadgets from now on. In fact, the IT security team gave him a secure phone and advised Kelly to no longer use the compromised iPhone. But just how did the security team noticed this problem with Kelly’s phone? Simply put, his iPhone wasn’t receiving updates and, possibly, hackers were manipulating the camera and mic, as well.
So, it was easy for them to see John Kelly and listen to what he was talking to other people on the phone. To make matters worse, it seems that Kelly’s phone was hacked long time ago, in December of 2016. Luckily though, now that he has a more secure phone, he will not be in danger of being hacked again. That, of course, if he’ll use the secure phone as instructed! Pay attention to your privacy, John Kelly!
