Sega will be taking things in a different direction with Yakuza Online, which was a game that they officially revealed during the Tokyo Game Show. While the footage that was released was previously only available to view in streams, the company has now officially uploaded the trailer to YouTube. You can check it out at the bottom of this post.
Yakuza Online seems to be taking things in a more casual direction when compared to the main series, with simplified gameplay that definitely seems to cater to mobile devices. The visual style looks more like a visual novel, with characters appearing as static images. Combat has you picking from a variety of characters that appear as cards on the screen, and tapping them will initiate their particular attack. It’s definitely different, and it will be interesting to see how it is received by the community.
The game will also be a departure due to the fact that it does not star Kazuma Kiryu, but a new protagonist named Ichiban Kasuga. Kasuga is a Kamurocho-born Yakuza that is returning to his hometown after being in prison for 17 years. “He does not know of both the mother who gave birth to him or his father. He was raised by a woman who runs a local snack bar and homeless with criminal records.”
The following is an overview of the game’s plot:
“Kamurocho, Toyko, the great entertainment district of the east. This city, which is known as the city that never sleeps, has been long dominated by the Tojo Clan, Eastern Japan’s greatest yakuza organization. However, it is 2018. The collusion between the police and the Omi Alliance have overtaken control. Kamurocho, where both the “public appearance” and “behind scenes” are thoroughly controlled by the police and Omi Alliance, had lost its former passion and began heading towards a slow death. Meanwhile, one man rises to take back the city as it once was. Born and raised in Kamurocho, Ichiban Kasuga is as stubbornly honest as he is pure. Working with his allies who share the same ambition, he will confront the major powers that be. But they will encounter an unexpected conspiracy—.”
While an official release date for Yakuza Online has not yet been announced, it is slated to launch in Japan in 2018 for PC, iOS and Android. Be sure to check out the trailer for the game below.
