We’ve known for a while now that DOOM is coming to Switch later this year, but it will obviously not be able perform at the level that the PlayStation 4, Xbox One or PC versions do. We learned last week that it won’t include the SnapMap mode that is included in the other versions of the game, and now we’re learning about the actual performance of the game.
Bethesda has now confirmed that the game will be displaying at 720p on Switch whether it is docked or undocked, and will also be locked at 30fps. This isn’t too surprising considering that the Switch is inferior to the other versions of the game in terms of the power of the hardware. Even still, the footage that we’ve seen of the game running on Switch did look pretty impressive, showing that maybe the Switch isn’t as weak as we all thought it was.
The company also discussed why the game’s multiplayer mode won’t be included on the game’s cartridge, saying that they wanted to ensure that the single player and arcade modes would fit on the cartridge together. Those two components add up to around 16 GB of space, whereas the multiplayer component comes to around 9 GB. Once players boot up the Switch version they will have to go to the eShop in order to download the multiplayer.
There also won’t be any motion control support for the game, which probably won’t upset too many people. Some were assuming that it might considering that Bethesda’s Skyrim Switch port will have the motion controls, but that control scheme makes more sense for Skyrim seeing as it’s much more melee focused.
DOOM for Switch is scheduled to launch this holiday season, and will be the first game in the series to release on a Nintendo console since 1997’s DOOM 64.
