Nintendo made the surprising announcement yesterday that Bethesda’s DOOM would be getting a port on Switch, which is truly impressive considering how graphically-demanding the game is. While some concessions will definitely have to be made in order for it to run smoothly on the Switch, Switch owners will still be getting the DOOM 2016 experience that many have gushed over on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
However, today we’re getting a closer look at just how well DOOM on Switch stacks up to the competition, thanks to some side-by-side screenshots. It should come as no surprise that the PS4 screenshots look sharper than the Switch ones do, but considering that the Switch is a much lower-end console compared to PS4 it’s truly impressive that they were able to attain even these visuals on the hardware. You can check out the DOOM screenshots for yourself right here.
This is a very big win for Nintendo and the Switch, especially considering we’re still in the first year of its life cycle. These are the kinds of games that the Wii U desperately needed in order to stay afloat, but unfortunately never got. If Nintendo can continue to nab some big third-party support while continuing to knock it out of the park with their first-party games, then they will definitely be giving the competition a run for their money.
DOOM isn’t the only Bethesda game that will be coming to Switch, as there are actually a few other releases that are on the horizon. We’ve known about The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim since the console’s announcement earlier this year, but we also learned yesterday that both of MachineGames’ Wolfenstein games will be coming to the platform. Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus will be coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC next month, but the Switch release won’t be happening until some point in 2018. Still, Switch owners will have the benefit of being able to play the game at home or on the road, which is fantastic for these types of games.
We of course need to see how these games end up running on the less-powerful Switch hardware, but it’s hard not to be excited if you’re a Switch owner.
