Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age launched on PlayStation 4 and 3DS in Japan, and the game immediately got off to a strong sales start. While the initial numbers were showing that the 3DS version was performing better than the PlayStation 4 version, we’re now learning that the numbers have flipped to what most were expecting.
Square Enix has revealed that the PlayStation 4 version of the game has enjoyed the strongest sales overall, “but given the installed base, we have high hopes for growth in sales of the Nintendo 3DS version going forward as well.”
The company was then asked if they felt that the game would be meeting its sales plan, and they responded with “We believe that we can reach the lower end of our unit sales plan. Our goal is to reach the upper end of that plan, but we believe that that will depend on how sales of the Nintendo 3DS version trend going forward.”
The total shipments and digital sales of the game have topped three million so far, which is definitely solid for a game like this. However, the fact that the game will likely be coming in at the lower end of their prediction shows that it isn’t performing quite as well as some might have hoped. It will be interesting to see how the game is received when it launches in other regions, especially considering that the series finally seems to be gaining some momentum with releases like Dragon Quest Heroes and Dragon Quest Builders.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age will launch in the west at some point in 2018, though an exact release date has not yet been given.
