Sony has released a new firmware update for the PlayStation 4, bringing the console up to versions 4.72. This definitely isn’t one of the biggest updates that the console has received, with the change log being very similar to the one that accompanied the 4.71 update last month.
The change log claims that “This system software update improves the quality of the system performance.” Downloading and installing the firmware update is required for online play, with the download size being 324.8MB. If you typically leave your PlayStation 4 in rest mode then it might have even already downloaded and installed for you, but some users report the consistency of this method being shaky.
Overall this is a pretty minor update for the console, though these smaller updates always happen in between the bigger ones. There are always new features that Sony is working on as a result of fan feedback, so it’s likely we’ll be getting another major update in the near future. The last handful of firmware updates for the console have all been minor, so there’s bound to be a bigger one on the horizon.
Despite the lack of exciting new features with the firmware updates, the console actually did get a great new improvement recently. The company announced last week that PSN trophies now sync much faster now, allowing a player’s trophy count to be added to their overall count with less of a hassle. It’s still not an automatic process like it is on Xbox One, but hopefully this will pave the way for that happening at some point down the line.
