Dying in a Mario game is a pretty common thing, but as long as you have enough lives you can typically avoid a game over screen without much of a fuss. However, in Mario’s upcoming adventure it looks like you won’t be able to get a game over screen at all, with the penalty for failure being much softer this time around.
The news was revealed through the game’s official Japanese Twitter account, which was accompanied with a GIF showing how this works. The caption of the tweet reads ““If Mario’s health drops to zero, or if he falls down a bottomless pit, you’ll lose 10 of your coins. But…! No matter how many times you’ll mess up, there’s never a game over.”
This is definitely an interesting change of pace, but then again the game itself is also a big departure compared to what we’ve seen before. Whether or not this ends up making the game easier remains to be seen, but I’d be willing to bet that there will be plenty of challenges to go around.
Mario’s newest adventure is set to be his biggest one yet, featuring a massive world with much more expansive levels. While Mario’s goal has always been to collect a particular item at the end of a level on his journey to saving the princess, it looks like that has been scaled up significantly for Odyssey. It was recently revealed that each of the game’s levels will contain somewhere around 30 to 50 Moons, which are the items that Mario will be collecting this time around. Seeing as there’s typically a handful of items Mario needs to collect in each level, this definitely suggests that the game is going to be much bigger.
Super Mario Odyssey is set to launch exclusively for the Switch on October 27th.
